Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
